Aerodynamic Induced Oscillations of Bluff Bodies

The class of flow induced oscillations that is of specific interest in this study was that which occurred when jet flow was directed over non-rigid bluff body. Of specifically interest was motion of tip of multiple cantilevered cylinders (AVEC tubes) in a cross flow.

The AVEC tubes were positioned in tandem perpendicular to an exiting air jet and were optically tracked.

The resulting data was image processed and analyzed. The following FFT’s provide evidence of the tube oscillations.

As the jet speed is increased the amplitude of AVEC tube oscillations also increased.Aerodynamic Induced Oscillations of Bluff Bodies image3
